District attorneys (DAs) are the highest-ranking law enforcement officials in their jurisdictions. Their authority is usually county-wide, although some district attorneys represent large cities. As long as they have probable cause, district attorneys have complete discretion in filing charges against individuals. District attorneys are responsible for prosecuting defendants in court. They present the evidence and arguments to a judge or jury, oppose the arguments of a criminal defense attorney, and work to obtain a conviction against the defendant.
