What is a district attorney?

District attorneys (DAs) are the highest-ranking law enforcement officials in their jurisdictions. Their authority is usually county-wide, although some district attorneys represent large cities. As long as they have probable cause, district attorneys have complete discretion in filing charges against individuals.
